St. Margaret of York uses a variety of assessments to evaluate our students' learning. Students take STAR reading and math assessments, AIMS web benchmark assessments, IOWA test of basic skills, Cogat (Cognitive Abilities Test), and ACRE testing (Assessment of Child/Youth Religious Education).
In 2020 & 2021, SMOY students in grades 3-8 tested above the 90th percentile on the IOWA Complete Composite (all subjects including Social Studies and Science).
Students in grades 5 & 8 participate in the ACRE test (Assessment of Child/Youth Religious Education)
Students in all grade levels participate in our Technology program. Students get to experience using squishy circuits, a wide variety of robotics, programmable drones, a 3-D printer, and virtual reality goggles. Classroom kits of Makey Makey, Microbit, and Hummingbird are also available.
Students receive instruction and get to practice code-based block design as well as text-based code design. Students are continually working on a keyboarding program starting in kindergarten through eighth grade. Students learn to utilize Tinkercad software and use a 3-D printer to bring their own designs and creations to life.
Our traveling Maker Space STEM Cart brings resources to the classroom so our students can create interesting and innovative engineering projects.
All classrooms are equipped with interactive Clevertouch Boards, and all students are provided with their own chromebook to use throughout the school year. While technology is an important part of any school curriculum, it does not take the place of hands on learning. All grade levels continue to use texbooks and workbooks, and chromebooks are considered one of many tools used in their learning journey.
St. Margaret of York uses a multi-tiered intervention program to assess where a student may need additional support, and together with the parents, teachers, and principal, create a plan to best support the student.
We offer intervention services, speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and hearing impaired services.
We have a full-time licensed professional counselor to support and assist our students and staff. In addition to individual visits, our counselor offers a variety of small group sessions to meet our students' needs. Students may request to visit the counselor at any time. Parents and teachers may also request the counselor meet with a student.
